University of Tartu

Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu (UT) is the largest and most comprehensive university in Estonia and one of the most respectable centres of education and research in Northern Europe. UT belongs to  the top 1.2% of the world's best universities and is ranked among the top 350 universities worldwide (THE World University Rankings 2024) and positioned as the 358th university in the world (QS World University Rankings 2024). UT is home to 14 780 students, including 11% international students from over 100 countries.

UT is famous for its research-based education. On average, the university awards over 100 PhD degrees and university researchers publish about 3,000 scientific articles annually. UT is in the top 1% of the world’s most cited universities and scientific institutions in the fields of Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Ecology, Plant and Animal Science, Geosciences, Social Sciences (general), Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biology and Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Behaviour, Psychiatry and Psychology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Microbiology (ISI Web of Science). A total of 64 UT scientists belong to the top 1% of most cited scientists in the world.

The university is an active member of international associations such as the ENLIGHT, Guild, LERU, U4 and the Coimbra Group. The university has 66 partnership agreements with universities around the world and participates in student exchange programmes and networks such as Erasmus+, ISEP, AEN, etc.

UT offers international degree, and summer programmes with instruction in English, and each year attracts an increasing number of international students from around the world. Currently, there are 31 international study programmes fully in English, including business administration, medicine, software engineering etc. Some of the university’s study programmes are truly unique, such as semiotics, philosophy and wellness & spa management.
