The Institute of Theology of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church

The Institute of Theology of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church is the oldest private universities in Estonia, established in 1946, after the Soviet regime had closed the only faculty of theology in Estonia at the state university of Tartu. The Institute continued to educate future clergy for the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Curch and is still doing so.

Today the Institute of Theology is an educational center for the whole Lutheran church in Estonia providing not only degree programs in theology but also continuing training both for pastors and other professionals and volunteers in church ministry. However, institute as an accredited private university is open for everyone having interest in humanistic education in the field of theology or education or would like to learn more about the interaction of Christianity and Western culture and society.

The Institute of Theology of the EELC offers following study options:

  • Professional Higher Education in Theology
  • Master of Arts Program in Theology
  • Master of Arts Program in Studies in Christian Culture
  • Studies in the Pastoral Seminary if you have the desire and sense the call to serve in ministry as priest or deacon;
  • Further studies in Church Music courses if you are a musician and seek to develop your church music skills;
  • Continuing education courses if you have a theology-related job and wish to make yourself better equipped for your career, or are interested in matters of religion.

At undergraduate and postgraduate level, we offer the possibility to study two tracks: theology and pastoral care. Within the theology track, it is also possible to specialize in Orthodox theology.

Teaching takes place in a beautiful medieval building in Tallinn's Old Town. Lecturers are renowned scientists and professionals in their field. As the student body is not very large, all students can benefit from personal guidance and mentoring from the lecturers.

Teaching is sessional, which encourages students to work while studying. We offer our students accommodation and meals during the sessions.

We welcome Estonian-speaking students.
